Beyond Our Walls #7: Marjo
In “Beyond our Walls,” we show you the places where artworks find their forever home. In this seventh series we take a look at Marjo in her apartment in Helmond, where especially the work of Igor Tishin can be admired.
“Igor Tishin is an artist from Belarus who always manages to surprise,” says Marjo. “His paintings have an expressiveness that doesn’t let you go. Especially his portraits of Marilyn Monroe continue to fascinate me. But what makes Tishin’s art really unique is that he invites you as a viewer to make up the story to go with it. He doesn’t give you a ready-made explanation, you can imagine it yourself. His use of color is bold and his subjects feel authentic and original. Each painting seems to have a life of its own, as if it whispers, “Come closer and discover what I have to say.”
Personal connection
“I also have a personal connection with Igor Tishin,” Marjo says. “He is a good friend of my husband Nick and used to visit us often. He even made works at our house. Igor is someone who has always followed his own path, and he still does. His talent and determination have earned him international recognition: he represented his home country at the Venice Biennale, the ultimate dream for any artist.”
The power of Belarusian art
In addition to Tishin’s works, a painting by Natalya Zaloznaya also graces Marjo’s living room. “Natalya is also an artist from Belarus,” Marjo explains. Both artists share the same cultural background, but their styles are quite distinct. “Art from this region has something special,” Marjo explains. “It often combines figurative and abstract elements in a way that is both striking and innovative. The work of both Igor and Natalya introduces you to this rich style and culture, but at the same time touches on something universal.” “Art like Igor and Natalya’s makes a home not only more beautiful, but also more vibrant,” Marjo concludes. “They are works that continue to intrigue and show something new each time. That’s what makes art really special to me.”
